Israel and Iran have been trading missile attacks for over a week now, yet life goes on in Tehran, the Iranian major metropolis – despite internet blackouts and massive restrictions caused by a disrupted banking system and tense economic situation.

“I’m not afraid to cry because of grief and misery. For a whole week, I was almost numb – until this morning, when I finally managed to feel and experience it all,” a young woman from Tehran says in her podcast, which serves as a diary.

She talks about a walk she took and her observations and impressions of her surroundings. She reassures her listeners that one of her favourite streets, with its many cafés and small shops, is still intact.

Cut off from the internet

The internet blockade remains a major problem. “Only a small number of us have access to the global network,” she says. She has arranged with friends and acquaintances to warn each other as soon as the Israeli military calls for evacuations again.

She describes how Tehran has been experiencing “restless, turbulent days and nights.”

“Nevertheless, there are reports that friends who fled to surrounding cities are slowly returning,” the 35-year-old says. Compared to the situation a few days ago, more shops are now open again.

And she adds: “Our money is running out, and we are considering what we can do.”

‘We just keep waiting’

She talks about the enormous psychological strain caused by the conflicts that arise when families and relatives come together day and night.

At the same time, there is a growing need to be there for those who are no longer in Tehran. “Under a hail of bombs, we comfort our loved ones who have fled abroad,” she says. Their pain and worries are just as real and undeniable, she adds.

She talks about all the cities that have been targeted by Israeli attacks and a situation characterized by uncertainty and overwhelming demands.

Between news reports, rumours and silent fear, there is hardly any room for clear thinking, she says.

“Everyone is meticulously analysing news from every available source – more out of hope of finding a glimmer of hope somewhere. But there isn’t one. We just keep waiting.”
