Braves’ Smith-Shawver gets Tommy John surgery

Atlanta Braves right-hander AJ Smith-Shawver underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery on Monday, the Braves announced on social media.

Dr. Keith Meister repaired the ulnar collateral ligament in Smith-Shawver’s right elbow in Arlington, Texas.

Smith-Shawver is out for the rest of 2025 and could miss part or potentially all of the 2026 season as well, based on the typical timeline.

The 22-year-old felt something pop in his elbow during the third inning of his May 29 start at Philadelphia.

Smith-Shawver finished the season 3-2 with a 3.86 ERA in nine starts. He struck out 42 batters in 44⅓ innings.

Still a rookie in 2025, Smith-Shawver appeared in six games for Atlanta in 2023 and made one start in 2024.
