Acting German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser on Tuesday called for critical infrastructure in the country to be better protected, following the massive power outage that plunged Spain and Portugal into darkness.
“The power outages in Spain and Portugal were on a scale that we have probably never seen before in Europe,” Faeser told German media group Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland.
While the blackout did not impact supply security in Germany, it was important “to use all the findings from the events to continue to ensure the highest level of security for critical infrastructures such as the energy supply in Germany,” Faeser said.
She called for regulations on the protection of critical infrastructure to be reintroduced in parliament and passed as quickly as possible, to implement binding EU law.
Faeser submitted a draft bill designed to ramp up the protection of critical infrastructure to Cabinet last year.
However, the legislation did not pass parliament due to the implosion of the country’s centre-left government coalition in November, triggering snap elections in February.
