Mbappé escapes with 1-game ban for violent tackle

Kylian Mbappé received with a one-game suspension after being shown a red card for a violent tackle against Alavés on Sunday, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced Tuesday.

The federation’s disciplinary committee said that Mbappé received the one-game ban for “violent conduct.”

Mbappé was aided by the referee’s report, which said the challenge had taken place “while disputing the ball.”

That meant the forward would receive a suspension of between one and three games, with the committee opting for the more lenient option.

The decision means the France forward will only miss Madrid’s upcoming LaLiga clash with Athletic Club on Sunday and will be available to face Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final on April 26.

Mbappé was dismissed in the 38th minute, after a VAR check, for his high tackle on midfielder Antonio Blanco during Madrid’s 1-0 win over Alavés.

The red card was Mbappé’s first since joining Madrid last summer.

Previously, he was sent off three times for Paris Saint-Germain — once in Ligue 1 and twice in cup competitions.

“Kylian isn’t a violent lad for sure; he’s said sorry, he’s aware of the mistake he made,” Davide Ancelotti, who is the son of Madrid boss Carlo, said afterward. “It’s a clear red-card challenge, and he’s suffered the consequences.

“All the little fouls they committed on him made him react in that way. It wasn’t the right way, I’m not justifying it, but that’s what happened.”

The victory over Alavés left Madrid four points behind LaLiga leaders Barcelona.

Mbappé will be available as Madrid attempt to overturn a 3-0 deficit in the second leg of their Champions League quarterfinal at home to Arsenal on Wednesday.

Information from ESPN’s Alex Kirkland contributed to this report.
