Marco Asensio scored his first brace for Aston Villa in his fourth match with the club last Saturday, with two assists from Marcus Rashford.

For his first goal, Rashford was onside when he received a cross from Matty Cash. He passed it to Asensio, who controlled the ball and poked it over the line despite Reece James’ attempt to clear it. Initially ruled offside, the goal stood after a VAR review.

Asensio’s second goal came thanks to a mistake by Villarreal goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen. A weak long-range shot slipped under his body after a short corner, allowing Asensio to score.

The 29-year-old isn’t focused on anything beyond the end of this season for his playing career. However, after joining a club that’s still competing on three fronts under Unai Emery in late February, he’s eager to help secure silverware for the first time since 1996.

Moreover, while speaking to Sky Sports, Asensio noted what has caught his eye in his first few weeks at Villa Park.

“I am really looking forward to what is left of this season because I believe there are lots of important challenges ahead for Aston Villa and we can feel that the support of the fans is there to help us achieve it,” Asensio said.

“It is incredible how they support us and encourage us. If you put that all together, the club, coach, players and fans, we believe that we can aspire towards achieving the maximum this year in the Premier League, the Champions League and the FA Cup.”
