How Borussia Dortmund performed in the first half against Sporting CP is something that fans have been accustomed to this season. Little movement, slow in possession and minimal pressing, but that all changed in the second-half of their Champions League win against Sporting in Lisbon on Tuesday night.
It was a must-win game for Die Schwarzgelben who are now in an excellent position ahead of their second-leg at the Signal Iduna Park as they look to confirm their place in the next play-off. But after an underwhelming first-half performance against Sporting, Dortmund’s display in the second-half was a breath of fresh air.
Dortmund came out aggressive, pressing Sporting CP high up the pitch, while also counter-attacking with one-two touch football. Speaking after Dortmund’s win, Kovac explained what he said in the changing room at half-time.
“We said that we simply have to play football much faster,” said Kovac. “Ball security is important, but we also have to circulate the ball quickly with little contact. This often helps you get out of stressful situations better.”
Karim Adeyemi’s goal, Borussia Dortmund’s third of the night, is exactly what Kovac was talking about. The German forward made use of his explosive pace to get his side in a 2v1 situation on the counter-attack, resulting in a goal, and effectively putting his side in the next round.
“It was fantastic how we scored the goals,” remarked Kovac. “And not just because we scored the goals well, but because the team held out until the end. They showed a mentality, a physicality and aggressiveness. That deserves respect.”
