7.6-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Caribbean Near Cayman Islands

A large, 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck the Caribbean on Saturday night, triggering a tsunami warning across much of the region, including Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Honduras and Cuba.

The quake struck 209 kilometers (about 130 miles) south-southwest of Georgetown, Cayman Islands, at 6:23 local time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The warning was lifted for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands about 9 p.m. local time. Honduras and Cuba were still on alert.

Cuba’s seismological institute said that the quake was felt in western parts of the island, including in the province of Cienfuegos and Isla de la Juventud.
