One of the funniest parts of Amy Schumer’s Netflix comedy Kinda Pregnant is her sex scene with co-star Will Forte. Given how it’s scripted — that Forte’s character cannot touch or look at Schumer when they decide to have sex for the first time — it might seem like an intimacy coordinator wasn’t needed. But the Saturday Night Live alum told Yahoo Entertainment the role was crucial in filming the standout moment.

Forte admitted that he was previously skeptical about the need for an intimacy coordinator. “Ten years ago, I would’ve said, ‘Ah, who needs that?'” These days, though, SAG-AFTRA encourages producers to add this role when there are scenes involving nudity or simulated sex. “It’s so good to have and puts everybody at ease,” Forte said.

Forte said the film’s “awesome” intimacy coordinator, Nicole Callender, helped choreograph the scene in which his character, Josh, lands in bed wearing oven mitts and an eye mask to do the deed.

“When you first hear ‘intimacy coordinator,’ you [think it’s going to be like], ‘Don’t you do this, don’t you do that.’ And this is just this wonderful person who’s there to help you guys feel comfortable with each other, and she’s also pitching in on how to make it seem realistic,” Forte continued. “I’m a real fan of intimacy coordinators in general and Nicole specifically.”

Kinda Pregnant is about a woman named Lainy (Schumer) who wears a fake pregnancy belly because she’s jealous of her pregnant best friend. She happens to meet the man of her dreams (Forte) while wearing the faux bump and keeps up the lie as they start dating. This is why Lainy had to get creative when it came time to have sex.

Forte and Schumer have known each other for years, and while he admitted that “it was a little weird at first” to play onscreen lovers, their friendship was an asset.

“It’s very interesting. Ultimately, it’s easier with a person you are friends with. It would be weirder to try to do that kind of stuff with somebody that you don’t know at all,” Forte said.

“I’ve known Amy for a long time, and I know her husband; she knows my wife, our kids have played together. So it was a little weird at first, but it’s a job. … You have to do it. It’s in the script. So it’s so nice to be able to do it with somebody that you’re comfortable with and friends with,” he continued. “She was really, really good about making me feel comfortable.”
