Manhunt in Brussels After Masked Men Open Fire Outside Metro Station

A manhunt is underway in Belgium’s capital after two masked gunmen opened fire with rifles outside a metro station early Wednesday morning, the public prosecutor’s office said.

The incident occurred near the Clemenceau metro station in the Anderlecht district of southwest Brussels, the office said. No injuries were reported.

Security camera footage from outside the station showed two masked men holding what appear to be Kalashnikov rifles, walking around on the sidewalk and firing indiscriminately but also ignoring multiple people passing by. The two men appear to flee into the station.

Willemien Baert, a spokeswoman for the public prosecutor’s office, said in a statement that the attack did not appear to have a “terrorist motive.” Investigators recovered several bullet casings, the prosecutor’s office said.

Two metro stations — Clemenceau and Gare du Midi — were closed to the public for about four hours Wednesday as law enforcement officers investigated the incident, public transit authorities said.

Koba Ryckewaert contributed reporting from Brussels.
