A chemical incident at a public pool in Melbourne, Australia Friday night left nine people hospitalized and hundreds evacuated, according to reports.

Firefighters were called to Broadmeadows Leisure Centre in the city’s north end around 6:15 p.m. on Friday following reports of a gas smell, per 9News. Around 40 people were reportedly affected by the smell, with nine being taken to local hospitals.

Eight children and one adult were hospitalized, reportedly with breathing difficulties and skin irritation, but thankfully it doesn’t seem like any were seriously ill.

Around 200 people were evacuated from the building while Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) hazmat personnel performed a sweep and ventilated the premises, according to News.au. A positive reading of sodium hydrogen sulphate–which can be used to regulate pH levels in water– was registered by the hazmat team members.

Two hours later, the facility was deemed safe to re-enter. A Hume City Council spokeswoman confirmed it would be able to open as usual on Saturday as well.

“Following a thorough assessment by WorkSafe immediately after the incident, it was confirmed the facility was safe to reopen Saturday morning,” the spokeswoman said.

The spokeswoman also said that the incident is under investigation, with a focus on determining the cause to ensure something similar never happens.

“We thank our staff and emergency services for their swift and professional response and thank the community for their understanding and support,” the spokeswoman said.
