Lando Norris accepts blame for crash with Oscar Piastri in F1 Canadian GP

Lando Norris admitted he was at fault after colliding into McLaren Formula 1 team-mate Oscar Piastri late in the Canadian Grand Prix.

In a desperate attempt to squeeze past the F1 championship leader down the home straight on lap 67, Norris went for a closing gap which resulted in his car hitting the rear of Piastri’s and then the wall.

There were no complaints from Norris, just an apology before he trudged back to the team’s garage having lost more points to his rival in the championship.

“I’m sorry,” he said over the team’s radio. “All my bad. All my fault. Stupid from me.”

It was the culmination of a two-way fight for fourth place and despite suffering damage, Piastri was able to hold on to the position thanks to a safety car finish.

McLaren will now start an immediate debrief. McLaren CEO, Zak Brown, had always maintained that he knew there would come a time when his drivers would make contact in the title fight.

And this reopens the debate over the team’s decision to employ ‘papaya rules’ to prevent their drivers from making contact on track.

The incident means Piastri now leads the F1 2025 drivers’ championship by 22 points ahead of second-placed Norris.
