When motorsport fans pondered whether Lewis Hamilton would invite any of his fellow drivers to the Met Gala, many wondered whether his teammate Charles Leclerc or former attendee Daniel Ricciardo might make an appearance. However, it seems nobody had 21-year-old Supercross rider Jett Lawrence on their bingo card.
The young Australian made a surprise appearance at fashion’s biggest night in New York City, becoming the first motocross rider to attend the prestigious event. “It’s honestly an honor,” Lawrence said in a statement. “It shows that Moto is expanding into new spaces, and I get to help lead that. I’m proud to rep the sport and show the world we’ve got style too.”
He was outfitted by Santo Studios – whom he recently inked a brand deal with – in collaboration with David August. “Moto’s always been about style and expression for me, so getting into fashion and hitting the Met Gala feels like a natural move,” Lawrence added. “It’s just another way to show personality and bring that same confidence from the track to a different kind of stage.”
In an Instagram video, he detailed his Met Gala look, which featured an embroidered suit in an “eggplant color.” He added, “It’s got a cool stitching pattern. We also have a high-collared shirt and pants that flare out a bit, almost like a boot cut … which adds a little bit of an 80s touch.”
He also donned a bow tie and high-gloss dress shoes. “It looks really elegant. I’m very excited to be wearing it,” Lawrence said. He had some racing company on the red carpet with Hamilton co-chairing the event. The seven-time F1 world champion has had an incomparable impact on the sport’s presence in the cultural zeitgeist. It seems Lawrence may be hoping to spearhead something similar in the world of SuperMotocross. Watch this space!
