The European Commission on Monday said it is in contact with Spanish and Portuguese authorities after a massive power outage caused blackouts across the Iberian Peninsula.
“The commission is in contact with the national authorities of Spain and Portugal … to understand the underlying cause and the impact of the situation,” a spokeswoman said in Brussels.
“There are protocols in place to restore the functioning of the system,” she added.
Power grids across Spain and Portugal dropped at around 12:30 pm (1030 GMT) on Monday, causing trains to stop, according to Spanish railway company Renfe.
Authorities are racing to restore electricity to the affected areas.
