Germany evacuates more citizens and family members from Gaza

The German government has helped 24 German nationals and their close family members leave the embattled Gaza Strip, the Foreign Office confirmed on Wednesday.

According to a spokeswoman in Berlin, the group will travel by bus through Israel and the West Bank to Jordan, where they are scheduled to board a flight to Germany.

The evacuation was carried out in close coordination with Israeli authorities, as with previous operations, she said.

Earlier this month, 19 Germans and their relatives were able to leave Gaza under similar arrangements.

Departures remain rare and difficult

Leaving the Gaza Strip — which has been under blockade for nearly two decades and is home to around 2 million people — has become increasingly difficult since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023.

Departures are only possible through a complex and lengthy clearance process, with Palestinians holding foreign citizenship having a slightly higher chance of approval.

Evacuation efforts ongoing

The Foreign Office said there are still German citizens and their families trapped in Gaza. “The German government continues to work on enabling their departure,” the spokeswoman said.

Much of the Gaza Strip lies in ruins due to war, which began with the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
